Certification

The CMI after my name means "Certified Medical Illustrator." To become certified, an illustrator must attend and graduate from one of six accredited masters programs in North America, or have comparable experience. Then a certification exam must be passed, after which a professional portfolio is submitted for Board review. To maintain certification, an illustrator must earn continuing education credits through approved classes and workshops. I earned my certified status in 1997.

Pricing & Payment

Jobs are priced based on complexity and time-frame. Rush work will be charged at a higher rate, as my schedule will be altered to accommodate your request. Generally, I can provide a quote based on the job specifications and a sample of illustration complexity. I often give a range of prices to cover simple, moderate and complex artwork.

Payment is due at the completion of the job, unless a long-term schedule is in place. In that case, I may request one-third up front, one-third mid-project, and one-third at completion.

Logos are priced at a flat rate, with additional hours charged for designing related pieces such as stationery, business cards, etc. If needed, I can act as liaison between client and printing/production vendors, supplying them with appropriate files or camera ready art and specifications.

Brochure design/layout jobs are estimated based on the time I believe the job will take. If excessive modifications or changes are made by the client once the job has begun, additional charges may be incurred.

Copyright

Artwork copyright is retained by the artist, unless addressed during job initiation and priced accordingly. There are options available that allow the client the flexibility of reuse and the artist the option for resale. If the client buys the copyright along with the job, I retain rights to show the work in my portfolio.
